iPod Free File Sync (iPFFS) is the only utility that allows synchronizing music from different iPods or any other source to your computer with ease. It shows you exactly which of the MP3/AIFF/WAV files in the source are not on your computer. After synchronizing, you can browse through the new files directly in the application you're familiar with - iTunes 2. You may then:<br>
- copy the desired files directly from within iTunes to your computer manually.<br>
- use the auto copy feature which copies the desired tracks based on artist/album to your computer.<br>

<b>How to use</b><br>
Start iPFFS and it will prompt you for the source. The source can be any folder or volume, including removable media or an <a href="#ipodnotes">iPod</a>, containing MP3/AIFF/WAV files.<br>
<br>
After defining the source, iPFFS will prompt you for the New Music Folder. The New Music Folder is just a folder where you can copy later the desired new files into. You may choose your main MP3 folder (that is "Documents/iTunes/iTunes Music" by default). If you later use the auto copy feature, iPFFX will add the files seamlessly to your collection.<br>

iPFFS then will prompt you if synchronizing should begin. Press "Synchronize" and iPFFS will backup your iTunes Library and starts synchronizing. iPFFS creates on the top some playlists for synchronizing + one for displaying the current state:<br>
You will get the best performance if iTunes is the foreground application and does not play music. Although iPFFS runs fine while you do other things, it will take longer in that case.<br>

When iPFFS is ready, it will notify you. Then open the playlist "iPFFS New Music". This playlist shows all files in the source which are not in your iTunes Library.<br>
Now use iPFFS's auto copy feature: Select the desired tracks in the playlist, then select the file "Start copying selected tracks" which iPFFS has created in your New Music Folder. iPFFS then starts to copy the selected tracks to the New Music Folder based on artist/album and creates folders and subfolders if not already present. iPFFS will notify you when copying is done. You may then continue to copy more files if you haven't them copied in one batch (or if you have forgot some).<br>
If you finished with copying, quit iPFFS. Before it quits, iPFFS will quit iTunes and restores your iTunes Library to the state it was before synchronizing.<br>

If you have used the auto copy feature, iPFFS will then automatically add the just copied files to your iTunes Library within a new playlist "iPFFS New Music Folder Content".<br>
If you didn't used the auto copy feature you should add the copied files manually to your iTunes library. Otherwise iPFFS will not know about them on subsequent synchronizations.<br>

You are done now. You may now sort the new music into your existing playlists, build new ones, whatever you like...<br>
You may also move the new files on disk. As long as they remain on the same volume, iTunes will keep the references from playlist entries to the actual files.<br>

<b>General notes</b><br>
- If you want to stop synchronizing, bring iPFFS to the foreground and press command-period. iPFFS restores your iTunes Library and quits.<br>
<br>
- If you have thousands of files, you probably have to raise iTunes memory partition in order to synchronize properly. If you get an error while synchronizing or if synchronizing is slow, you should assign more memory to iTunes.<br>
<br>
- Error-/Crash protection: If an unexpected error occurs, iPFFS will restore your iTunes Library and quits then. If the computer crashes for any reason while synchronizing, just restart the computer and launch iPFFS, it will restore your iTunes Library.<br>

<a name="ipodnotes"></a><b>iPod notes</b><br>
If you connect an iPod which is not linked to your Mac, you will get the message "The iPod is linked to another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library?"<br>
Press "No".<br>
To avoid this warning in the future, you can setup the iPod Preferences to "Manually manage songs and playlists"<br>
<br>
In order to synchronize from an iPod properly, you must check "Enable FireWire disk use" in the iPod Preferences. The iPod's disk must be mounted on the desktop. Please note that you can copy your music directly on the iPod's disk, without iTunes synchronization, and iPFFS will still synchronize it. Using the iPod as a common removable drive may simplify synchronization in some cases (just a suggestion).<br>

iPFFS doesn't touch your iPod's properties. After synchronizing it is still linked to the computer of your choice, so the common iTunes synchronization from your computer to the iPod still works.<br>

<b>Known Issues</b><br>
- Localized systems: The French version of iTunes (and probably others too) has a localized name for the iTunes library file. If you get the message "iTunes library not found" you can drag the library file (located in "Documents/iTunes/") onto iPFFX and try again, it should work then.<br>
<br>
- If you want to use iPFFS with OS 9.1 you need AppleScript 1.6 which is available from Apple under Support/Downloads (search for "AppleScript").<br>

- Multiple Users Control Panel: iPFFS will not run under a user account which is restricted to "Panel".<br>
